Perez and Laokiatphong Win Bronze

On the third day of the billiards competitions at the World Games, the first medal decisions were on the schedule. In Women’s Three-Cushion and Women’s Snooker, the matches for third place were played, and bronze medals were awarded.

Women’s 3-Cushion

The two semifinals took place in the morning. Dutch player Therese Klompenhouwer gave her opponent Charlotte Sörensen (Denmark) no chance in a commanding 25–3 win, while in the second semifinal, Ayaka Miyashita from Japan prevailed over Jackeline Perez (Peru) with a score of 25–17.

The bronze medal match between Sörensen and Perez turned into a real thriller. The Peruvian was a few points ahead in the final phase, but Sörensen tied the game 24–24 and even had match point. She missed it, however, and Perez seized her chance to score the final point and secure the bronze medal.

Women’s Snooker

In the first semifinal between the two Thai players Narucha Phoemphul and Ploychompoo Laokiatphong, both frames were decided only on the final colors. Phoemphul took the first frame 37–31 and edged the second 47–39.

The second semifinal was more one-sided, with Yulu Bai of China defeating Wendy Jans from Belgium in two frames, 40–14 and 51–34.

In the afternoon’s bronze medal match, Jans started stronger, taking a 38–23 win in the first frame. But Laokiatphong came back, winning the second frame 36–15 and dominating the decider 45–4 to claim the bronze medal.

Men’s 3-Cushion
The first quarterfinal this morning was an all–South Korean affair, with current world number one Myungwoo Cho defeating his compatriot Junghan Heo 40–29. Then, Vietnamese player Quyet Chien Tran beat Jeremy Bury (France) 40–32, while Germany’s Martin Horn made a statement with a 40–31 win over Pedro Piedrabuena (USA).

Last but not least, Sameh Sidhom of Egypt continued his outstanding World Games form in his third appearance, dominating Tayfun Tasdemir (Turkey) for a clear 40–21 victory.

Men’s Snooker
Billiards fans on site and watching the livestream saw four straight 2–0 wins in the men’s snooker quarterfinals. Muhammad Asif from Pakistan first eliminated Britain’s Zac Cosker, before Guodong Xiao lived up to expectations against Sourav Kothari (India).

In the third quarterfinal, Ali Al Obaidli (Qatar) led Alexander Widau 64–0 in the first frame, but the German fought back with a 65-point break to take it. He then also won the second frame to reach the semifinals.

The fourth semifinalist is Michael Georgiou from Cyprus, who beat Poland’s Sebastian Milewski—impressive in the group stage—by 2–0.

Men’s Pool
Three Europeans reached the semifinals of the men’s 10-ball event. First, defending champion Joshua Filler (Germany) edged Poland’s Daniel Maciol 9–8. Gerson Martinez of Peru then held off Jinhu Dang (China) after a 7–7 tie to earn a semifinal against Filler.

In the third quarterfinal, Hungary’s Oliver Szolnoki claimed his third 9–8 win of the tournament, defeating Kun-Lin Wu (Chinese Taipei). The final semifinal spot went to Poland’s Wojciech Szewczyk, the former world champion, who led Denis Grabe (Estonia) for most of their match and won 9–6.

Women’s Pool
The last four players in the women’s event are also confirmed. In the match between Shasha Liu and Soledad Ayala, the Chinese player won 7–4 over the Argentine. This was followed by a display of dominance from the Philippines’ Chezka Centeno, who beat Mayte Ropero (Spain) 7–2.

The most exciting quarterfinal was the third, where Yu Han (China) stayed just ahead of Germany’s Pia Filler. At 6–5, Han closed out the match. The last match of the day was a clear-cut 7–3 victory for Germany’s Ina Kaplan over Meng-Hsia Hung (Australia).

Heyball
Chunxiao Tang started the day with a quarterfinal against her fellow Chinese player Tianqi Shi, winning comfortably 5–1 to book a semifinal spot. There she will face South Africa’s Jason Theron, who kept Chile’s Alejandro Carvajal at bay with a 5–2 win.

In another all-Chinese quarterfinal, Taiyi Zhang defeated Xin Liu 5–3, before Shivam Arora (India) won a nail-biter 5–4 against Kin Ling Yip (Hong Kong, China).
